In this, our 54th report, we focus on Mount Veeder and its wines. We begin with a brief history of the region examining the role played by early German settlers and the many talented growers and winemakers who followed. In the sections that follow we examine the geography, soils and climatic conditions that contribute to the unique character of the wines. In particular we identify the steep hillside slopes, exposures and microclimates that characterize the vineyard parcels of Mount Veeder.

Abundant, fine tannins that are a Mount Veeder hallmark, along with exceptional weight and concentration. Red wines often exhibit dark fruit flavors of blackberry/raspberry (“bramblefruit”), sweet herbal notes and deep stony minerality, with forest flora aromatics.

… None of these wineries is included as a Top Producer in Laube’s story, and only one (Hess Collection) is mentioned in the brief reviews that follow, but I found them pretty damned brilliant.

The output of the 20 or so wineries that occupy the Mount Veeder appellation is not huge, averaging 40,000 cases annually, less than 2 percent of the Napa Valley production. I wrote about the wines of Mayacamas Vineyards back in August , and mentioned more recently a couple other Mount Veeder wines here and here . Today I look at cabernets and chardonnays from Fontanella, Godspeed, Robert Craig and Y. Rousseau…
